On January 28, 2025, in its latest statement on Ethiopia, Amnesty International, called the ongoing war on Amhara — characterized by mass arbitrary detentions, extrajudicial killings, and the use of combat drones to strike civilians and civilian infrastructure — “a travesty of justice and a blatant human rights violation.”
According to Amnesty International, “the world must stop turning a blind eye to Ethiopia’s human rights crisis as the [Abiy Ahmed regime] continues to trample on the rule of law.”
Furthermore, the human rights organization urgently called upon the international community to pressure the Abiy Ahmed regime to cease its systemic human rights violations in the Amhara region, including mass arbitrary detentions, stating: “Ethiopia’s development partners, as well as African and global human rights bodies, [must] use their influence to publicly call for the release of all arbitrarily detained people.”
Amnesty international also urged international pressure to stop the ongoing crack down on civic space in Ethiopia, asserting: “International pressure on the [Abiy Ahmed regime] is essential as authorities continue to crush civic space, including suspending four prominent human rights organizations.”
